چکیده

Silver Birch (Betula pendula Roth), a pioneer tree species, and Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) used for revegetation are typical tree species in the mine reclamation area of the Sokolov Basin (West Bohemia, the Czech Republic). Chlorophyll content in their foliage can be used as one of the indicators of tree stress caused by adverse soil conditions with heavy metal contamination being the major stress factor. In August 2010 hyperspectral images with resolution of 5×5 m were acquired with the HyMap sensor. In selected areas, samples of leaves and needles were collected and their spectral reflectance curves were measured with an ASD FieldSpec 3 spectrometer using the contact probe. Spectral reflectance data were related to the chlorophyll content determined spectrophotometrically in laboratory using different spectral indices (MCARI, TCARI/OSAVI, mNDVI705, ANMB650–725) already successfully applied for other tree species in prior studies. Suitability of the indices is discussed for application on coniferous foliage of pine and broadleaved birch. The present work is a part of a study aiming to create a methodology for chlorophyll determination in silver Birch and Scots Pine from available hyperspectral data.

Fine root morphological adaptations in Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch along a latitudinal gradient in boreal forests.

Variability in short root morphology of the three main tree species of Europe's boreal forest (Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth)) was investigated in four stands along a latitudinal gradient from northern Finland to southern Estonia. Silver birch and Scots pine were present in three stands and Norway spruce was present...

Foliar Potassium Concentrations of Bil- berry, Bog Bilberry and Downy Birch as Indicators of Potassium Nutrition of Scots Pine on a Drained Peatland

Leaves of bilberry (V. myrtillus), bog bilberry (V. uliginosum) and downy birch (B. pubescens) were collected fi ve times during a growing season from 18 plots in a drainage area, and needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) once during the following winter from the same plots at Parkano, southern Finland. The aim was to study the potassium nutrition of the test plants and relationships betw...

Dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen leaching from Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch stands in southern Sweden

The effects of three common tree species – Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch – on leaching of dissolved organic carbon and dissolved nitrogen were studied in an experimental forest with podzolised soils in southern Sweden. We analyzed soil water collected with lysimeters and modeled water fluxes to estimate dissolved C and N fluxes. Specific UV absorbance (SUVA) was analyzed to get inf...

Developmental lignification and seasonal variation in - glucosidase and peroxidase activities in xylem of Scots pine , Norway spruce and silver

We examined the relationship between β-glucosi-dase and peroxidase activities and xylem lignification in the stems of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) during the 1999 growing season. Examination of stem cross sections stained with safranin and Alcian blue for lignin and cellulose, respectively, indicated that radial...

Levels of selected trace elements in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), silver birch (Betula pendula L.), and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) in an urbanized environment

The aim of the study was to determine the concentrations of selected trace elements in needles and bark of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), leaves and bark of silver birch (Betula pendula L.), and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.), as well as in the soil in which the trees grew, depending on their localization and hence the distribution of local pollution sources. The content of trace element...
